In what may be the most shocking move in the young history of MLDSB, the Colorado Rockies have shipped the face of the franchise and arguable the most popular Rockie in team history, Troy Tulowitzki, to the hated division foe, the Los Angeles Dodgers for one of the top pitchers in all of MLDSB, SP Zack Greinke. Desperate for a great arm to compliment the decent arms in the starting rotation, the Rockies decided that they had sufficient hitting to offset the loss of Tulowitzki to acquire Greinke who has been incredible so far in the 2013 campaign. Other players were involved in the trade including the Rockies getting cash back from the Dodgers but clearly the key to this trade involved these two outstanding players.
GM Dan Stamey was asked at the news conference last night during the announcement of the trade why he would trade Tulowitzki to a division foe. “Is it crazy to do that? Probably. But how often do the Rockies get an opportunity to bring in one of the top pitchers in the league to Colorado? Greinke is only 29 and is hitting his peak and I believe we are only starting to see the greatness in Zack. Our hopes is that he can show that top pitchers can come here and be successful. This organization needs this young star to help us achieve our goals. The fans of Colorado, though disappointed now, I believe will see this as a monumental move for this organization.”
Troy Tulowitzki was very business-like about the decision saying that he will play just as hard for the Dodgers to help them win an MLDSB Championship as he has played for the Rockies but that his heart is in Colorado. He said he had hoped to play his entire career with the Rockies. On the season, Troy is hitting .273 with 6 HRs and 28 RBI.
Greinke said he was excited to join his new club and help them catch and surpass the Dodgers in the NL West. He currently sports a 5-0 record with a 1.72 earned run average and 0.79 WHIP in 36+ innings of work this season.
Colorado also sent LF Tyler Colvin to the Dodgers while getting SS Justin Sellers and $5 million in cash in the deal.
The Rockies are most likely not done dealing as the team payroll has ballooned with their recent trades. Greinke is slated to make $17 million this season and that increases to $24 million in 2014.
