Washington’s owner was AWOL during the off-season and FA. When he emerged from his work imposed sabbatical the season was about to start. To prepare for a playoff run he did what most elite GMS do. 1) Canned his manager before the start of the season and brought in a journeyman whose main talent was not ticking off his star players. 2) signed a bunch of retreads and FA castoffs. 3) Claimed his number 3 starter off of waivers. 4) Traded away his farm system (And likely AL ROY) for two Center Fielders. It all paid off however with a team that hit 385 HR and had two 70 HR hitters. Including Jeff Badger who broke Barry Bonds’ record with an amazing 78 HR. Washington made it through the playoffs on the strength of its mediocre pitching and ridiculous team power capturing the deciding game 6 by hitting a total of 8 home runs in a 15-8 slugfest.
